Zuko, from Avatar: The Last Airbender

Here is another character from Avatar: The Last Airbender.
This is Zuzo, the banished prince from the fire nation. His appearance (clothes and hair) have changed a lot over the three seasons of the series, so it was very hard trying to decide how to represent him. I ended up choosing to represent him as what he looks like in the third (and last) season. There are actually two different hair versions for this image, but I decided to post here the one in which he looks more like a prince.
If you want to see the version with his hair lose as well as some close ups of the images, you can go here:

There are screen captures of the original cartoon character of Zuko in the link above, as well

This image was all done on Photoshop. I painted everything, with the exception of the pattern drawing of the clothes; that I got from http://www.cgtextures.com/

Avatar: The Last Airbender (Mai)

I don’t know how many people watch it, but there is an animated series called Avatar: The Las Airbender, that I’m quite fond of. I frequently spend way to much time thinking about tv shows, movies and books that I like, and Avatar is no exeption.

One of the things that I have frequently wondered about this show is “what would the characters look if they were actual people instead of cartoon”, so I decided to paint some of them as I imagine they would look like. This is the painting of Mai, a noble girl of the fire nation, who is kind of gothic and very blasé.

I wanted to be as faithful as possible to the character’s appearance and expression, but that created a few problems; On the show, her hair is very peculiar looking and perfectly combed and whenever I tried to make it more realistic it stopped resembling Mai, so I decided to keep it with the same proportions it has in the animated version. Also, her features are very sharp, so its tricky making her look feminine, with the right amount of softness among the stiffness typical of this character. But all in all, I’m pleased with the final result.

This was all done on Photoshop. I painted everything, with the exception of the pattern texture of her clothes (you know, the little flowery drawings) and some of the background textures; those I got from http://www.cgtextures.com/ .

If I still have time and patience, I might do a few other characters.

If anyone want to know what Mai looks like as a cartoon, here are some links:

Easter bunny family time

I did this image about 3 years ago, while I worked at the studio Fesher Neo-Iulistração. This is a family of easter bunnies preparing chocolate for Easter (I’m not sure how tradition goes around the world, but in Brazil the easter bunny brings chocolate for the kids).

I’m not used to composing scenes with background (usually I just do characters) so there are some composition and perspective problems that bother me on this image. I recently adjusted it a little so I would have the courage to post it in here, but I know that when I look at it in a couple of months I’ll probably want to rip my eyes out.
A work colleague and I had to do this from sketch to finish in about two days. He did the shells and molded the “house” and I did the crab and illuminated the scene. This image is not exactly as the one used in the campaign. I adjusted a few things that I didn’t like in the original version. Photoshop was used for this illustration. The sand texture was photographed.
